Tapping into employee’s creativity can provide companies with a wealth of ideas that may have been overlooked, additionally it creates an engaging environment for workers.
Stena Line a large blue chip organisation were struggling when it came to engaging employees to drive innovation within the organisation. Stena Line’s employee contributions towards new processes, products or innovations were virtually non-existent with one suggestion per employee being made every 19 years, and no systems in place to manage the innovation process. Falling short in comparison with other leading organisations.
Targeting Innovation was engaged to help with the development of an innovation strategy and process which was appropriate for the company and their 5,000 staff members. This involved establishing the principles of an innovation culture, defining innovation objectives linked to the company’s financial goals and specifying the parameters to develop an innovation intranet which would provide a platform for managing innovation and engaging stakeholders. This was delivered through a series of workshops, focus groups, training and incentives.
After the first year, 2,500 new ideas were evaluated. The 200 that progressed to implementation were forecast to generate a return of £15M through cost savings and revenue generation.
